And engineers are just going by the way they see a problem.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-exrw3m evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">\u2022 What\u2019s the streaming business\u2019s problem on the horizon?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-exrw3m evys1bk0\">Margin. It doesn\u2019t scale. At Netflix, the more subscribers you have, the less your costs are. In streaming music, the costs follow you.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-exrw3m evys1bk0\">And the <strong>streaming music services are utilities<\/strong> \u2014 they\u2019re all the same. Look at what\u2019s working in video. Disney has nothing but original stuff. Netflix has tons of original stuff. But <strong>the music streaming services are all the same<\/strong>, and that\u2019s a problem.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-exrw3m evys1bk0\"><strong>What happens when something is commoditized is that it becomes a war of price<\/strong>. If you can get the exact same thing next door cheaper, somebody is going to enter this game and just lower the price. Spotify\u2019s trying with podcasts. Who knows? Maybe that will work.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-1fanzo5 StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-exrw3m evys1bk0\">And let me just say, what Daniel Ek has done with Spotify is extraordinary. I knew who he did those original deals with. Those were impossible deals, and they\u2019re suffering from that now. All the streaming companies are. But he\u2019s done an incredible job.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-1fanzo5 StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-exrw3m evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">\u2022 If you look at the last 20 years of the music business as a recovery from Napster, has the problem now been solved?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-exrw3m evys1bk0\">I don\u2019t view it as problem solved. There\u2019s been progress, but there\u2019s a ways to go yet. <strong>If I were still at Interscope, here are the things I\u2019d be worried about. I\u2019d be worried that I don\u2019t have a direct relationship with my consumer.<\/strong> The artists and the streaming platforms do.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-exrw3m evys1bk0\"><strong>I\u2019d be worried that an artist like Drake or Billie Eilish streams more than the entire decade of the 1980s<\/strong>, according to the information I\u2019ve seen from labels and streaming services. I\u2019d also be worried that the streaming services aren\u2019t making enough money, because that can jackknife.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-exrw3m evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">\u2022 What about the future of the record business? Why should the next <\/strong><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\"><a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/03\/28\/arts\/music\/billie-eilish-debut-album.html\">Billie Eilish<\/a><\/strong><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\"> sign with a record company at all?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-exrw3m evys1bk0\">The <strong>artists now have something they\u2019ve never had before, which is a massive, direct communication with their audience \u2014 from their house, their bed, their car, whatever.<\/strong> And because of that, everybody wants them. <strong>Spotify wants them, Apple Music wants them, Coke wants them, Pepsi wants them.<\/strong> And people that make terrible second records are still famous and still have online audiences. The power of celebrity, this obsession with Instagram \u2014 it\u2019s driven by personality and lifestyle.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-1fanzo5 StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-exrw3m evys1bk0\"><strong>So hail to the artists, because in the end they\u2019re winning. It isn\u2019t their problem to figure out how the streaming company and the record company are going to make more money.<\/strong> It\u2019s the streaming company and the record company\u2019s problem to figure out how to become more valuable to that artist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-exrw3m evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">\u2022 You left Apple in 2018, just three years after launching Apple Music. Why?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-exrw3m evys1bk0\"><strong>When I went to Apple, it was a new creative problem for me. How do we make this the future of the music business?<\/strong> How do we make it not ordinary? But I ran out of personal runway. Somebody else will have to do that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-exrw3m evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">\u2022 What do you think about Taylor Swift pushing for <\/strong><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">control of her master recordings<\/strong><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-exrw3m evys1bk0\">Well, who doesn\u2019t want to own their masters? But what she is doing is amplifying that because she has a giant platform. That\u2019s going to have an effect, and it isn\u2019t going to be neutral. So <strong>if you\u2019re a 16-year-old kid making music on Pro Tools, that is now in the conversation.<\/strong> If I was still at Interscope. I would say, \u201cO.K., this is coming. So I have to figure out, how do I evolve my relationships with artists?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-exrw3m evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">\u2022 What\u2019s the secret for an artist to have a long career today?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-exrw3m evys1bk0\"><strong>Quality \u2014 of everything you do. Make quality the priority, not speed. Speed is marketing<\/strong>, but you have to have something great to market.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-exrw3m evys1bk0\">Dre says we\u2019re seeing a lot of quantity over quality right now.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-1fanzo5 StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-exrw3m evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">\u2022 Are you impressed by artists\u2019 work now?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-exrw3m evys1bk0\">Artists have these new platforms that are very, very powerful. <strong>So why do visual artists like Mark Bradford, Kara Walker, Ed Ruscha, Jenny Holzer make such powerful statements on where we are today in our culture, like Marvin Gaye, Public Enemy, Bob Dylan or Rage Against the Machine did? What has changed?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-exrw3m evys1bk0\"><strong>One of the reasons I left music was because there wasn\u2019t a kind of music that I related to.<\/strong> I grew up with Patti Smith, Bruce Springsteen, John Lennon. \u2026 And here was a guy whose music I loved, and all of a sudden, I was part of, \u201c<em class=\"css-2fg4z9 e1gzwzxm0\">We <\/em>don\u2019t agree with this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-exrw3m evys1bk0\"><strong>These days I am getting that from the art world and not the music world.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-exrw3m evys1bk0\">\u2026<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-exrw3m evys1bk0\"><strong>When I got that painting, I knew that Ed had hit on something. And I said, \u201cWhere are the musicians that are doing this?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-exrw3m evys1bk0\">There are some clues. <strong>Have we entered into an age of music where artists are afraid to alienate people? But not nearly enough.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-1fanzo5 StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-exrw3m evys1bk0\">If I were still running Interscope, I would be signing artists and encouraging them. <strong>Right now there are a lot of people running around saying, \u201cWhat\u2019s making noise on TikTok?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-exrw3m evys1bk0\">That\u2019s fine. But <strong>I\u2019m more encouraged by the people who are saying, \u201cWhoa, this artist has something to say. I\u2019m going to support them, because I believe that in the end they\u2019re going to win, and that will make all of us win.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"><\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 \u2013 \u2013 \u2013<br \/>\n<strong>The biggest story in music over the last decade was the industry\u2019s reconciliation with tech \u2014 after a decade fighting the internet, the music business fully embraced it in the 2010s.<\/strong> Streaming has now finally returned the business, which was nearly decimated by the shift from physical to digital formats, to growth.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps no one has had a broader view of this phenomenon than Jimmy Iovine, the producer and record executive who made the leap to the other side. <strong>He and his partner, Dr. Dre, sold their company, Beats Electronics, to Apple for $3 billion in 2014 and helped launch Apple Music<\/strong>, the tech giant\u2019s late entry to the streaming market, which now has more than 60 million subscribers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It was, from the start, a strange pairing. Apple is obsessively cautious in maintaining its public image; Iovine, the son of a Brooklyn longshoreman, blurts profanities in a high-pitched rasp and is one of music\u2019s great hustler-salesmen.<\/strong> But Iovine, who co-founded the Interscope label in 1990 and led it until he left in 2014, has long been one of the sharpest observers of the tug-of-war between the entertainment business and Silicon Valley.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Iovine, 66, retired from Apple in 2018, and says he has devoted himself to passion projects like the XQ Institute, an educational initiative led by Laurene Powell Jobs<\/strong>, who was married to the Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. He has even started taking guitar lessons. \u201cI\u2019m realizing how hard Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen\u2019s jobs really were,\u201d he said from his home in Los Angeles, with a chuckle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThis painting says more than any song that I\u2019ve heard in the last 10 years,\u201d Iovine said. \u201cWhy is that?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Have we entered into an age of music where artists are afraid to alienate people?
