{"id":4092,"date":"2019-12-22T08:23:43","date_gmt":"2019-12-22T07:23:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/silta.es\/juantatay\/?p=4092"},"modified":"2019-12-22T08:23:43","modified_gmt":"2019-12-22T07:23:43","slug":"the-next-decade-by-baptist_simon-from-theeiu-the-economist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silta.es\/juantatay\/the-next-decade-by-baptist_simon-from-theeiu-the-economist\/","title":{"rendered":"The next decade (by @baptist_simon from @TheEIU \u2013The Economist\u2013)"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p>The first is <strong>changing patterns of growth.\u2026growth can no longer be taken as a given, even over the longer term.<\/strong> In the last decade <strong>a dozen or so countries ended up with a lower level of real GDP than they started with\u2026<\/strong>\u00a0Over the next decade <strong>the world will have to get used to a slowing China<\/strong>\u2026<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>fastest-growing countries will be in Africa (although not Nigeria) and south and south-east Asia<\/strong>, with Bangladesh, Kenya and the Philippines all looking at a strong decade.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A second, and related, development that needs <strong>to be top of mind for the 2020s is ageing.<\/strong> On the one hand, this will mean <strong>near-zero growth for the economies whose populations are ageing and declining the fastest<\/strong>, like Japan, Italy and Portugal. But it <strong>will increasingly cause difficulties<\/strong> \u2014such as strengthening currencies and aged care needs\u2014 <strong>in emerging markets<\/strong> like Chile, Russia and Thailand.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A third trend I expect is a <strong>continuation of political instability<\/strong>: <strong>rising literacy and falling costs of communication will continue to revolutionise politics in emerging markets<\/strong>. \u2026 <strong>policies that result from these shifts in communication\u00a0do not always facilitate well-being or growth<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The fourth (and final) trend I suggest here is preparation for a <strong>sustained divergence between the US and China<\/strong>. \u2026 <strong>Both sides will be putting companies and other countries into uncomfortable positions as a result.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The first is changing patterns of growth.\u2026growth can no longer be taken as a given, even over the longer term.
